Cheesy Chili Oil Oliebollen

Traditionally, oliebollen are sweet fried dough balls dusted with powdered sugar, and you’ll see them everywhere around Christmas and New Year’s Eve. But who says they’re only meant for winter? This version flips the script with melted cheese, salty ham, spring onions, and a drizzle of crispy chili oil. These oliebollen prove that some classics deserve to be enjoyed all year round!

Cooking Time: 15-20 minutes

Serves: 1-3 person

Ingredients

  • 100 g shredded cheese
  • 1 cup diced ham or bacon
  • 1 egg
  • 200 ml milk
  • 2 spring onions, sliced
  • 1 tbsp mayo
  • 200 g flour
  • 7 g baking powder
  • Crispy chili oil
  • Salt & pepper

Instructions

 

  1. In a bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, egg, milk, mayo, cheese, ham/bacon, and spring onions.
  2. Season with salt and pepper and mix until you have a thick batter.
  3. Heat frying oil in a deep pan over medium heat.
  4. Use an ice cream scoop or spoon to scoop the batter into the hot oil.
  5. The balls should be slightly smaller than a tennis ball.
  6. Fry until golden brown and cooked through, turning occasionally.
  7. Remove from the oil and let excess oil drip off on a paper towel.
  8. Finish with extra cheese and a generous drizzle of crispy chili oil.
